WSPTA Legislative Priorities for 2007-2008

Legislative Priorities will be determined by PTA members from across the state who attend & cast ballots at WSPTA Legislative Assembly to be held Oct 5th & 6th 2007 in Sea Tac WA.

Take the Lead

Take the Lead is a new campaign for a more dependable way to adequately fund our public schools. WSPTA and League of Education Voters (LEV) are collaborating with Washington Education Association (WEA) hosted a series of conversations held all around the state.

What the issues were for 2006-2007

1.    K-12 Education Funding - WSPTA shall initiate and/or support legislation or policies that establish an updated definition of basic education and a basic education funding formula that reflects current education practices and requirements.

2.    Mathematics and Science   - WSPTA shall initiate and/or support legislation or policies that strengthen scientific and mathematical education in Washington State.

3.    Simple Majority for School Levies and Bonds - WSPTA shall initiate and/or support legislation or policies that allow the people to vote on Simple Majority for school funding measures.

4.     Reduce Class Size - WSPTA shall initiate and/or support legislation or policies that support funding and policies that secure smaller class sizes for students.

5. School Recess - WSPTA shall initiate and/or support legislation or policies which require regular recess periods throughout the school day.

Legislative Priorities were determined by 239 PTA members from across the state who cast ballots at Washington State PTA Legislative Assembly in Yakima 10/13-14 2006.

Simple Majority Campaign

EHJR 4204 will be placed on the November 2007 ballot asking the people of Washington to decide if school levies should be allowed to pass with a simple majority (50%+1) instead of a supermajority (60%) vote of the people.
